Give the Gift of Giving 5/27/16

Paschal and Tony didn’t have any time to meet with us this week. So I guess I don’t have any funny quotes to give you this week.

But I do have a video of us riding our bikes through the city at night. Its kinda long. Watch it in double speed, it will be way cooler. https://youtu.be/vv-i1OtoS6Q

President sent me on a quest. He asked me to buy $20 worth of Pokemon so that he can convince his grandchildren to come to Cambodia. He's going to take a picture of the Pokemon and send it to his grandkids so they will want to come and play. I would have fallen for it. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/5flufreu7ftdl6y/AADXTgP6lU0f-6ziDJArCoJYa

Cambodia's first Krispy Kreme opened on Monday. Every missionary was there. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/sclg1m2xbd02vm8/AAA_XoIlY5_kBTmcmIjS1a_Ia

We have another Nigerian investigator named Patrick. He always says he wants to get baptized. Even from the first lesson he wanted it. We are about to drop him though because he just wont read the Book of Mormon. He always says he reads but the gift of discernment tells us that he totally doesn’t read. We had never been to his house until this week and the gift of discernment also told us that he actually hasn’t quit smoking weed yet. Well, anyways Patrick is a cool guy. He is nice and he likes us and he likes to pray and his prayers are really beautiful. But Patrick is a classic case of somebody you teach and teach and pray about and try to do anything you can to get him to read the Book of Mormon but he is just not ready. If he would spend some effort to read then he would understand why we ask him to read it so much. If he would read the Book of Mormon he would understand how important Christ is in our lives.  If he would read the Book of Mormon he would understand the weight of the covenant of baptism. He would understand if he would just read. But its alright. Heavenly Father loves him just the same. Maybe one day he will be ready, but if not then Heavenly Father still loves him the same.

I’ve been listening to a bunch of cool Clayton Christensen talks this week. He is a really smart guy and I hope to meet him one day. He is a great member-missionary and has tons of cool ideas about how to improve missionary work in the church. One of his ideas is to offer people service opportunities. He says that we usually share the gospel by offering them a better life and more happiness. But a lot of people are pretty well off and are pretty content. They are comfortable and think they don’t need a lot of extra help from the church. But these are also the same people that are looking to find ways to give back and serve. People spend tons of time trying to find good causes to support. Well we have a lot of ways to use that support in our church. Brother Christensen talks about one neighbor of his that was well off and retired a little bit younger than normal. He tried to invite this guy to church multiple times with no success. But one day an old lady in the ward needed help fixing and moving an old fridge. Clayton called everyone in his Elders quorum but nobody could help that day. So he remembered this friend and decided to ask him. His friend accepted and they worked with this stinky old fridge for 2 hours trying to fix it. Towards the end of this service project this guy said “So Clayton, tell me more about your church.” And Brother Christensen answered “Well, this is pretty much it.”

In our church we know our members needs and we have a lot of opportunities to serve and meet those needs. If we involve friends in our service they will feel good about serving and feel the spirit and want to learn more and serve more.

I think this is a great idea for member-missionary work and we are going to try to implement it more in our mission soon.

“The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best medicine for despair is service. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired.” - Gordon B. Hinckley

I know that the Book of Mormon is true. And if you read it you will understand. I know that losing your life in service is the only way to find it. I feel like I have found parts of my life here in Cambodia because of the opportunity this church has given me to serve. I am forever grateful to the church and to Heavenly Father for the change in my life this mission has brought.

Love,
Elder Osborne
